Dissolved Organics Analysis

June 21st, 2012 Posted in Uncategorized

Hi my name is Nathalie Arnone and I am from Ellicott City, Maryland. I am an undergraduate student going into my third year at Coastal Carolina University located in South Carolina. I’m at UTMSI in the REU Program funded by the National Science Foundation. I’m majoring in Marine Science with a minor in Coastal Geology and another minor in Environmental Science. My mentor is Chris Shank and I will be working with a graduate student of his, Qiuyan Liu. This summer I will be focusing on understanding the sources of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and how important they are to the water column in marsh environments. I will be conducting several different tests on a core sample that I harvested from the seagrass beds located in the Lower Laguna Madre/ South Padre Island area. By creating several samples, I will be able to analyze and understand the mechanisms that release dissolved organics from suspended particles. This is very important for the monitoring of marsh environments.
