My name is Winston Anthony and I am studying in Dr. Luis Rocha’s Lab. I am studying marine reef fish ecology and evolution in a lab setting. This is a multi-step process which begins in the field collecting specimens and taking fin or gill clippings. From these clippings we can extract DNA through a long and arduous process. This process allows us to put the DNA through a polymerase chain reaction which reconstructs the DNA. Then we can run a gel electrophoresis which draws DNA down an electric current from negative towards positive. This whole process allows us to track genetic markers through populations and species and lets us see patterns linking the species together.
